Controversial calls may be a thing of the past, thanks to chip-in-ball technology. It’s been recently reported that the NFL is currently in talks about using the chip. Currently, the only way to challenge a call is to review a video replay. But with this new technology, a chip would be placed in the center of the ball and send a signal to officials once it completely crosses the goal line. Interestingly, this technology was originally created for the soccer field, and gained renewed popularity after a controversial call at this year’s World Cup. But a rejection of the technology by soccer officials has led to exploration of other sports where it would be useful.
